biography
loanne ii tran (liit) is a first-generation visual artist born and raised in winnipeg, canada, and co-based in toronto and winnipeg.
through their conceptual practice, they dissect their childhood to grasp an understanding of their thoughts and emotions while navigating their queerness, gender, diasporic asian identity, and role within society.
while balancing their love for fashion, they indulge in editorial and commercial photography, exploring new ways of communicating through body and material.
liit co-founded the Shoes Off Collective in 2021, a student group that connects through in-common diasporic experiences. the group was formed to gather lost students who felt the yearning for their Asian communities, seeking cultural connection but didn’t know where, how, or who to start with. she obtained a BFA from ocad university and works as a class assistant for the ocad university plastics fabrication studio.
artist statement
my interdisciplinary work is inspired by the intricacies of my childhood, revolving around the dynamic interplay between my past self and present. primarily expressed through photography and sculptural work, a central element of my practice involves storytelling through the use of models or myself as a form of self-presentation. whether through inhabiting domestic spaces or exploring intimacy with queer and/or diasporic bodies, my work intends to stir emotions, initiate conversations, and prompt introspection.
my work is intuitive, as art is a vessel to release the memories stored within my mind and translated into a tangible form in the physical world. some of these memories are repressed or “forgotten” but recovered through unpredictable triggers. as I analyze each memory through my art, trying to recapitulate the past, it no longer holds a raw, authentic state as these moments are altered by words but stowed and felt within the body. i hope to invite others along my journey of connection and reflection, fostering a shared experience.
